The Great American Songbook: A Journey Through the Decades

The history of the Great American Songbook is the history of America in the first half of the 20th century, with the songs and themes and styles reflecting the political, economic and social trends of the times.

Stephanie traces the roots of the Songbook to the years of the Great Industrial Revolution of the turn of the century and the Immigration and Migration trends and cultural mixing of peoples and their music and traditions.  The result was Vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley, and an explosion of Theater in New York – reflected also in the development of technology – from people buying pianos for their parlors to records to radio. Then she moves into the world of film and television and the migration of writing talent to L.A.

Stephanie sings songs from the different eras and shows the way the music grew and changed to reflect what the country was thinking and doing.

It's a marvelous window into American history and a varied show spanning 6 decades.
